Technical Translations

Technical translations

IBS provides technical translations in accordance with DIN EN 17100. Whether operating instructions, manuals, catalogues or patents: with us your technical documents are in safe hands.

Technical translations demand particular care and attention. If the terminology is not translated correctly, in the worst case this can have life-threatening consequences. Only a slight misinterpretation in a manual can signal danger for your employees or equipment.

For this reason, IBS takes meticulous care to ensure that your technical documents are processed exclusively by translators who can demonstrate expertise in your specific industry segment.

The right terminology makes the difference

Excellent language skills are one thing; however a translator is soon fighting a losing battle if he is not well versed in the technical jargon of a specific sector of industry. For example, what may be referred to as a "current collector" in one branch of industry is known in railway technology as a "pantograph". Seemingly harmless words such as the German "Gehäuse" may be translated into the "car body" of the automotive industry or as "enclosure" in the technology field. But was a "cabinet“, a "housing" or even a "valve body" actually meant?

Even for sworn translators with specialist technical knowledge, finding the right term is often a balancing act. That's why, at IBS, technically challenging texts are always revised by engineers from the respective specialist field. With our "6-eyes principle" we make sure that the translation process does not negatively affect your precision technology.

In very specific technical fields, we also get in touch with your engineers to produce a correct glossary for your particular business. This procedure pays off, especially in the case of lengthy documents, and prevents errors from creeping in which, in the most serious case, may pose a risk to your engineers or equipment.

Correct glossaries and translation memories

To prevent mistranslations as in the examples cited above, we work with you to prepare glossaries for your specific branch of industry and your products. We store these lists of terminology that we prepare for you in so-called "term banks" to ensure that the correct technical terms are always deployed in texts for your company. In the software that we use, these term banks are uploaded with each new text and in this way indicate to the translator that for your company, for example, the term used for "Gehäuse" is not "housing" but rather "cabinet".

Increased efficiency

The use of so-called translation memories (TMs) is particularly appropriate to technical translations with identical text passages (in operating instructions, manuals etc.). They allow extensive company documentation to be translated quickly and cost effectively. Translation memories speed up the translation process and make it efficient. A TM is a database that consists of text segments previously translated and confirmed by our translators. This means that TM systems are not machines that take over the work of the translator. However, with the aid of intelligent search and memory mechanisms they ensure that the consistency of large documents is maintained. The TM serves as a reference for the translator for previously translated text passages. 100% repetitions are inserted automatically, which saves you money!
